Posted: Wed., Aug. 4, 2004, 7:19pm PT 'Mail Order' U.S. bound Rubin shingle places pic on slate By CATHY DUNKLEY Gary Rubin's recently formed distribution company First Independent Pictures has acquired U.S. distribution rights to "Mail Order Wife," which it will release in February. Pic (formerly known as "Mail Order Bride") stars Eugenia Yuan, Adrian Martinez and Andrew Gurland. Gurland co-wrote and co-directed pic with Huck Botko. Story concerns a lonely guy from Queens who's fed up with the dating scene and decides his best option is to order a wife through a catalog of Asian women. When his beautiful bride arrives, it appears his dreams have been answered, but everything is not as it seems. Pic was exec produced by Hypnotic co-founders Doug Liman and David Bartis. Cherry Road Films CEO Bo Hyde and prexy Kendall Morgan produced and financed the film with Nina Yang and Bob Sheng's Double Edge Entertainment. Ithaka creator Andrew Weiner also produced with Avram Ludwig. Rubin formed First Independent during the 2004 American Film Market. He was formerly exec VP of sales and acquisitions for Artisan Entertainment. With Liman and Bartis, Gurland and Botko are currently working on "Human Animals," a television pilot for FX. First Independent is also releasing "Pursued," starring Christian Slater, Michael Clarke Duncan and Estella Warren.
